· Who are the students your students will communicate with (specific location, grade level)?
Our Students are from a 3rd grade classroom at Andrews Elementary in Three Rivers, Michigan. They are researching Indian food, and the Indian Culture. They're looking to distinguish the difference between their American Culture and the Indian culture. Our classroom is going to go on a field trip to Indian Cuisine in Portage, Michigan to test out some of the Indian food. We want our students to communicate with Indian students from India, within the same age range. We have located a classroom in Kolkata, India, and our students plan on asking questions to the Indian students about their unique culture.
· When would your students contact these other students (at what point in their project work)?
Our students plan on contacting these other students after they have visited the restaurant in Portage, Michigan. After seeing how Indian people eat and how different the American culture is, they're going to write letters and emails to students in Kolkata asking them about these differences and why certain things are done.
· What kinds of questions would they ask each other and what kinds of information would they share?
Since our main subject is food and dining etiquette, the questions that the students will exchange with each other will be about this topic. Our students will be asking questions about Indian food traditions, why they don't use utensils, and why is mostly everything spicy, what are the different types of sauces they use, and why is bread always used with their food. They can ask our students any questions about American culture.
· What will they do with the information they get from the other students?
Students will be in groups of 3-4 students, and will be responsible for putting together a presentation of what they learned about this culture's eating habits. They will also have to ask their Indian friends for pictures of themselves eating food, so they can include that in their presentation, the students can also gather information about popular Indian recipes from their pen pals, and recipes for sauces.
